Standard Lock in Composite and UPVC Doors is a Security Risk

When you lift the handle on this type of door, you see and hear the bolts shoot out, this looks and sounds great and it reassuringly makes us feels safe. However there is a security risk associated with this type of door which burglars are increasingly aware of.

If your door is a UPVC (plastic) or Composite (made of a combination of materials e.g. steel, wood & plastic etc.) regardless of whether you are a domestic property or commercial business; these types of door are fitted with multi-point locks which rely on a device called a euro cylinder (barrel) to activate the lock. approx. 90% of these euro cylinders are vulnerable because they can be snapped off with very little force.

Most burglars are now aware of this and are using this method, commonly referred to as ‘lock Snapping’ to break into houses quietly and with the use just normal household tools.  In a recent police press releases it has been stated that approximately 20% of break ins are due to burglars using this lock snapping method. In fact the problem has become that widespread in Yorkshire that the police have issued a notice, warning the public about this issue.

This problem is further compounded if the euro cylinder protrudes more than 4mm away from the handle because it makes it easier for the cylinder to be snapped (The more it protrudes the easier it is to snap).

This issue can be resolved quite easily by fitting an Anti-Snap (Snap-Safe cylinder) to your door which is specifically designed to prevent this method of attack and fitted from only £30. These locks are designed to snap at a safe point which stops the burglar gaining access to your locking mechanism. They are very affordable and should be fitted by a local reputable locksmith and will without doubt go along way to help make you and your loved ones feel safer in your home.
